Ideal first IMAC Purchase in 2024

My plan is to pull the trigger on an Imac purchase this spring if the magic accessories are outfitted with USB-C ports.  Looking at the 10 core GPU model but undecided if 16gb RAM is needed?

Also considering the trackpad instead of mouse?

Basic needs are web surfing, email, & Microsoft Office.  I may use Luna or Duet programs to allow the

Imac to be used as a secondary display from my Windows laptop when working from

home.

I’ve already switched from Android to Apple TV, Iphone 15 Pro, Ipad Air with magic keyboard.

Any thoughts on the ram and trackpad are appreciated, TIA!

Windows, Windows 6

I prefer using a trackpad over a mouse, however it is really personal preference. I have used them for about 10-15 years on various Mac including several iMacs with absolutely no problems. The current models are rechargeable however you can use them as a wired device by simply using the recharging cable that they come with. Don't be offset that the cable isn't USB C a simple adapter (available for <$10 will fix that problem or your can use a Thunderbolt Dock or Hub.

I agree on the RAM, based on your needs 16GB should be more than enough and as stated iMacs do NOT have user upgradeable RAM, that went away back in 2020.

I DO NOT recommend either Luna or Duet to use your iMac as an external display for your PC. If your PC needs an external display just buy one. This is:

  • Less expensive and does not require expensive third party software.
  • Offers the best performance, no possible software lagging.
  • Is dead simple to setup and use.
  • Is completely reliable.

I’m suppressing my anxiety to pull the trigger on the IMAC now, using the lightning as an excuse as I did waiting for the IPhone 15 purchase. Maybe I’ll give in at some point. I agree with the monitor recommendation. Although it is nice just letting a HDMI cable dangle from the extra port in my Dell 24” monitor and plugging into my work laptop when I need to. Thanks for the feedback.
