Solution for Pairing A1016 Keyboard with OS X Ventura- Homebrew BlueUtil

It took literally hours to figure this out. Generally, those instructions listed in the Ask the Community are correct BUT unclear when it comes to entering the pairing instruction in OS X Terminal. I'll skip over the blueutil installation instructions. I obtained the keyboard address by pairing A1016 and looking it up under the "About this Mac" tab. It may come up by entering blueutil --paired instruction in OS X Terminal if your computer recognizes it. It will something like 00-0a-95-xx-xx-xx. The pairing instruction will look something like blueutil --pair 00-0a-95-xx-xx-xx. Making sure the Bluetooh GUI is up and your keyboard is listed in the Nearby Devices. You're going to use an USB keyboard or laptop keyboard. Make sure the A1016 green light flashes. After pressing enter for the pairing instruction, you are going to enter 0000 on THE A1016. Repeat every 8 seconds until you see a response in Terminal Expect to see error codes. Expect to do this over and over. It took me about 20 tries. (Another poster said it took 50 attempts). Finally, you'll see a terminal instruction to enter the pin code (0000) on the A1016. Then A1016 will show as a connected wireless keyboard in the Bluetooth GUI. This will be all about trial and error for. I finally connected the A1016 to my MacBook Pro running Monterey and my iMac running Ventura.

Have patience. Eventually it will work. Good luck!

@joman50 Praise the Lord!

Your post helped me connect.

After following instructions here:https://github.com/toy/blueutil/issues/71 for getting the blueutil installed and getting the mac address...

(Note to gather the mac address I DID NOT follow the turning bluetooth off and on. After running the inquiry I turned on the keyboard while it was running and it automatically popped up in the results without having to turn Bluetooth off. The mac address is the first of the prompt for those who don't know what they are looking for.)

I was stuck on error codes for about 30 attempts.

I restarted computer and let simmer for several days.

Then, after coming across this on what seemed to be the same google search. Following these instructions and the timing of having the bluetooth interface up first, turning the keyboard on and waiting till I saw the option to pair 5ish seconds for me, then switching to the terminal window (on bluetooth gui the keyboard disappears) entering the terminal command, then immediately entering the 0000 on the keyboard I was given the prompt to enter the pin which was the only thing I was not seeing.

I was able to pair on first try. Seems like timing is key.

One thing I discovered was minutes before trying this System preferences updates wanted to install command line tools for xcode 15.3 Perhaps this helped things as well? Mac mini m1 running latest Sonoma update is now better with the A1016 bought used at a thrift store. A1016 Also works with my android boox tablet and windows laptop.

I have typed this out on my A1016 thank you!!!!!

What if I have no idea what any of this means? I've been searching for a fix to pair my A1016 with my MBP M3 running Sonoma. It seems like it is very possible but...

  1. This a work computer and I'm concerned about downloading anything on it.
  2. I have no idea what some of the fix step mean

I do have the same issue everyone else is having where the bluetooth sees the keyboard and tries to connect. If I hit enter a code blips on the screen and disappears before allowing entry.

Can someone help a non-IT person out with some of these steps? Our IT Director isn't very familiar with Macs so I the blueutil is safe and I can explain all of this to him then maybe I can get by beloved keyboard paired again!

Thanks for any help y'all.
