what is charging by lightning for an Apple 1st gen pen

My Apple Pencil-ZML 2016 (1st gen?) is charged by putting it to the lightning port of the iPad Pro 9,7" 1st generation 2016. That pen does not work in my new iPad Air 10,9" (5th Generation, M1) so I got Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) that has wireless charge from that iPad.
