iMac startup disk options

I have what I believe to be a difficult question. Presently, I have an OLD graphite Mac G3. On this computer, I have some desktop publishing software that I would not like to purchase again.

I am seriously considering buying a 24” iMac to replace the old G3. Would I be able to somehow take the HD out of the G3, and use that drive as a startup disk to enable me to run my DTP software under the old system on my new machine?

If it is 16 bit software it will not run on any Mac made since about 2015 or so. Also, a G3 Mac does not even use an Intel microprocessor so that means the app would not be able to run on M based Mac. In short, your DTP is at the end of the road. Finally, you cannot start a current M based Mac with the HD from your old G3.

It's time to move on and buy new DTP software or move to another app. Your only other option is to try and live in the past with the old G3.

Hey there!

Unfortunately, no. These computers are two different systems, separated by generations of different operating systems, hardware, and software.

The iMac with M3 chip will not run an earlier version of macOS than macOS Sonoma 14, which is Apple's current operating system released in 2023.

You will need to re-purchase the current version of the software you require.
