My Airtag is in the Police Station, but where?

I lost my wallet with an airtag attached. I enabled lost mode and it appeared at an address which happens to be a police station. But they cannot find it. I've given them my phone to walk around the office using the "Find My" app but it's still not detecting it. My understanding is that in order for the airtag to be located, a device has connected to it and sent the location. Is that correct? If so, how accurate is the location? Is there any way I can find out which device has located it?

Many thanks

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Thank you very much for that explanation.

In order to aid the police in finding it, I gave them my phone to walk around with. At this point I could see on my phone the screen "Searching for signal.." Presumably the police office never got the connected message. Am I correct in thinking at this point they need to be within 30ft of the airtag to get a connected message?

Can you think of anything else I could do to get a location?

Thank you for your time.

The AirTag works in conjuction with the Apple Find My Network. In theory, any iPhone (properly configured) with an active Internet connection, would be able to pick up the tag's Bluetooth signal and relay it to the Apple servers. This is where you would see its location on the Find My app on your iPhone.

The location sent is actually from where that iPhone is located, which would be within Bluetooth range of the tag ... around 30-40'. So between this distance, and the accuracy of the iPhone's GPS location is where the location "precision" would fall between.

... and no, there is no way to know what iPhone located it. Even Apple does not get this information when that phone relays the tag's location to the Apple servers for security reasons.

Yes, that is correct. Also, as Rudegar has pointed out, any iPhone within 30' of it should be able to receive the tags signal ... and, it is that phone, that relays its own location to the Apple servers.

When actually using the iPhone that was paired with the AirTag, when that phone is within 30' is should "see" the tag. Only the newer iPhones have precision finding capability which will assist with locating the missing tag. I don't believe an iPhone 6 has this feature.
