Connecting 2019 iMac to Type C monitor

Hi. I'm hoping someone can help as I'm at my wit's end trying to find a solution.

I have a 2019 iMac 27" that I'm trying to connect to a second 4K@144hz monitor that I just purchased. I have the MSI G321** monitor which I got because it has DisplayPort connections and USB type C display inputs.

The DisplayPort input is being used by my PC and I'd like to connect the iMac to the type c input to get higher quality (4K@120hz or 4K@144hz) than just HDMI.

I thought connecting the monitor would be as simple as connecting a high-quality USB-C data cable between the monitor and the iMac, but I've tried two options and neither has worked.

1st attempt: I tried a USB 4.0 cable from Brimford capable of 8K@60 and 4K@120 as I assumed it would be backward compatible with the 2019 iMac ports, but the monitor wasn't recognized by the iMac. I used "detect display" on the Mac to try to force discovery but no luck.

2nd attempt: assuming the USB 4 cable was not supported I bought a LEIRUI USB C to USB C video cable with the following description:

"4K@60Hz USB C Video Cable:240w USB C to USB C cable compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4 port. Offers 4K@60Hz (3840*2160) video output function from USB C laptops to USB C display screen or monitor, such as LG 4k, Samsung, HP EliteDisplay, Dell USB-C Monitors and more."

This cable was also not able to connect to the iMac successfully.

I'm confused if the 2019 iMac does not work with a type C monitor because it does not have DP alt mode capability or if the issue is with the monitor or if I'm not using the correct cable connectors...

I'm willing to explore other connection options but ideally, I'm looking to get optimal display performance out of the monitor.

Thanks!

You need a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI adapter!!!!

That's a 4K UHD monitor. It has HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4a, and USB-C inputs.

The specifications page and manual claim that all of the inputs support 3840 x 2160 at up to 144 Hz. (To get 144 Hz refresh rate over HDMI, you must be using HDMI 2.1.)

That doesn't mean the the Mac does. I don't know whether you have a 21.5" iMac or a 27" one, but the Technical Specifications for both only refer to a 60 Hz refresh rate. There's no promise of anything higher.

It does appear that the monitor should be able to fall back to 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz (monitor manual, page 22). So the answer to "Why can't I get 120 Hz or 144 Hz?" might be "It's not supported.", but I'm not sure why you are not able to get the monitor to work at all.

Most USB-C to HDMI adapters go from USB-C (DisplayPort) to HDMI, not from USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to HDMI. Even when vendors mention Thunderbolt, they're usually just trying (in a clumsy way) to reassure customers that their USB-C (DP) adapter will, in fact, work with a Mac that has Thunderbolt ports.

There are plenty of monitors that take USB-C (DisplayPort) input that a 2019 iMac should be able to drive with a quality USB-C to USB-C cable. The thing that stands out here is not the USB-C connector, per se, but the high (120 Hz and 144 Hz) refresh rates.
