Private Relay keeps turning itself off without any warning

Private relay turns off multiple times every day, to the extent that it is unusable. When it does work every web page takes 30-40 seconds to open, sometimes not at all, when it is off pages open immediately. Applies to my iPad and iPhone 14 and 15 and Xr and even MacBook Pro on three network, both mobile data and WiFi. An actual VPN is much faster. All fully updated. Same on Sky and Virgin WiFi.

I've had this same problem with Virgin Media on and off for months. I would get frequent notifications saying Private Relay had switched off and then on again. I would also notice ads were very slow to load in the YouTube app and switching off Private Relay would fix this.

After reading this post, I changed the DNS on my router (a Netgear - the VM router is in modem mode) to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and haven't had the issue since then.

This only happens to me on one particular Virgin Media router, others are fine, the settings on the VM router look to be default

A VM forum chat mentions;

Virgin Media's Web Safe service and Apple's Private Relay rely on their DNS being used, i.e. both services cannot be used in conjunction.

If disabling Web Safe for all user of the network is not an option but it is impeding Private Relay then consider trying the following localised change:

  • go to Settings > Wi-Fi
  • select the Wi-Fi network currently connected to
  • select Configure DNS under DNS section
  • select Manual
  • delete the current DNS shown under DNS Servers
  • add a new DNS.....
