iPhone 15 Pro Max - AirPods disconnect only during WhatsApp and Telegram calls

Hi everyone, hope you can help me with an issue that is driving me insane.

This Christmas I upgraded from my old iPhone 8 to a brand new iPhone 15 Pro Max. I have since been experiencing constant AirPods disconnection only during calls via WhatsApp and Telegram. "Normal" calls over my carrier, video playback, Spotify and all the rest is fine.

This is happening with both AirPods 3 and AirPod Pro 2.

This is my setup:

- iPhone 15 Pro Max iOS 17.2.1

- AirPods 3 latest firmware

- AirPods Pro 2 latest firmware

I literally run all the tests I can think of (reset AirPods to factory settings, restore iPhone 15 Pro Max multiple times, with and without backup, etc), and I can confirm that:

- I don't experience this issue on my work phone (iPhone 13 Max Pro, iOS 16.7.2) and on my old iPhone 8 (iOS 16.7.2)

- Restoring the iPhone 15 Pro Max to factory settings without reinstating previous backups doesn't help. I'm still experiencing the issue even if I wipe the phone, login with my Apple ID without restoring any backup and downloading WhatsApp as the only app on the phone.

- Apple allowed me to return my iPhone 15 Pro Max and gave me a brand new one. I restored my latest backup, and I am still experiencing the issue. This leads me to believe that something got corrupted somewhere on a system software/backup level.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey mate, I actually managed to find the cause of the issue and was about to update this thread.

I didn't want to believe it at first but it looks like the issue was caused by some sort of electromagnetic interference between my carrier and the environment. I'm based in the UK. I tested different carriers, swapped loads of SIMs etc and the issue happens ONLY with my original carrier O2 and carriers that use O2 network (GiffGaff, Tesco, etc). It must be something in the coverage of the area as I noticed that if I have 5G the issue doesn't happen.

I tested all the other operators in the UK - Vodafone, EE, Three and all the ones that use their network - and the issue never happened again, either in 4G or 5G.

I'd advise to try with another SIM card and please let me know if the issue gets fixed for you as well as I am really curious at this point.

It seems like you've already gone through a lot of troubleshooting steps. Here are a few more things you could consider trying:

  1. Ensure that both WhatsApp and Telegram are updated to the latest versions available in the App Store. Sometimes app updates include fixes for compatibility issues with new devices.
  2. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN settings. Sometimes network settings can affect call connectivity.
  3. Check the permissions for WhatsApp and Telegram. Go to Settings > WhatsApp/Telegram > and ensure that Microphone and Background App Refresh are allowed.
  4. In iPhone Settings, go to General > Background App Refresh, and ensure it's enabled for WhatsApp and Telegram.
  5. Reach out to WhatsApp and Telegram support directly. They might have encountered similar issues reported by users and could provide specific solutions or updates.

Since this issue is specifically related to these apps, contacting their support teams might yield more targeted solutions. It's also possible that it could be related to how these apps interact with the newer iOS version or the hardware of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Have you noticed any patterns in terms of specific settings or configurations unique to your usage of WhatsApp and Telegram during calls that might trigger this issue?

Hi SravanKrA, thank you for your help!

Going point by point:

  1. Both WhatsApp and Telegram are updated
  2. Done that many times, no luck. I'll try with another SIM card to exclude carrier problems.
  3. Background App Refresh and Mic all good
  4. Background App Refresh all good
  5. I'll try that but the impression is that AirPods disconnect with call via the internet in general, will try with other apps like Skype to get another sample

In terms of patterns, the only thing that I noticed is that AirPods works fine after the very first reset (any kind of reset - AirPods reset, network reset, phone wipe, backup reinstate, etc) then stop working after few hours.
