The problem is most likely you purchased the Gift Card from a retailer that openly displays them for anyone to have access to them. This is the fault of the retailer and I would also go to them with the problem you have experienced. What happens in this case where they are openly displayed is that people can grab a bunch of cards then scratch off the sticker and write the code number down. They replace the grey sticker with a new one that can be purchased from Amazon and put it back on the display in the store. After you get the card activated they will spend the balance before you get a chance to.
Retailers will lock up products that are subject to theft where they could lose money, but some will not care about their customers losing money on the most common gift card scam that has been going on for years. In the future, never buy Gift Cards that have access to the public and only purchase them behind a counter.
