AFP client in MacOS?

Sonoma provides the ability to mount an AFP share. But Apple says that the Apple File Protocol (AFP) is "deprecated"

I'm still mounting my Synology NAS via AFP. Are there any plans to remove AFP client support in future versions of MacOS? Am I safe to continue using AFP for upcoming versions of MacOS?

Thank you.

Hello. I'm a professional graphic designer with more than 30 years working with Apple. Our design studio is in Barcelona, and we work for all Europe. We have always worked with Mac OS Server and 10 years ago we started with Synology NAS. Everything always perfect.

But when I bought a new Mac Book Pro M2 Max of 4.500 € the nightmare began. With Ventura I started to have serious problems with the Synology NAS. I upgraded to Sonoma and it was impossible to work. More than 20 forced reboots a day. Other iMacs I have upgraded to Sonoma also with severe connection problems. We tried SMB but everything is very slow and impossible to work.

I have always defended Apple, which was born and survived in its beginnings thanks to the graphics professionals, but now it lets us down by eliminating AFP, claiming it's for security. Of course, they have caused the insecurity by filling OS with "new features" that are purely aesthetic but worthless. I guess they prefer to sell iWatches and iPhones.

You're right... this wouldn't happen with Steve.

We have 5 Macs in our studio. I want to renew 3 of them, but I don't dare, as they won't work. I'm considering buying 3 PCs and throwing the Macs away. Steeevee... please come back!!

"Deprecated" has no expiration date. Only Apple could tell you when they plan on removing it altogether.

Is there some reason you still want to access your Synology file shares using AFP? Is it for Time Machine backups, per chance? If so, you don't need to, as SMB2/3 will work just fine. I know as I have a 916+ NAS that I use for both file sharing and for TM backups.

FWIW, I am running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 on my 2023 M2 Pro Mac mini and am not having any kernel panics using SMB.

I am not sure what Apple is doing but for sure they are killing the best apps and technology they invented and its a shame, I am sure if Steve was around it would not allow it and would make a great company which Apple nowadays is not !. No innovations and milking same hardware and killing great apps for example one of the best Aperture photo app and now AFP ! and a big shocker OSX Server ! These were the best apps and technologies.

I simply can not use SMB 2 or 3 ! Its so buggy and does not work with unix naming character structure and hidden files ! Why would apple prefer Windows buggy file sharing like SMB over great AFP !?

I use AFP till today and will as long as i can !

I had so many problems with SMB3 and 2 trying to sync mac files to NAS or Remote Storage devices via WEBDEV , SFTP, SMB. All failed !! It stops transferring and its also slow ! . I used apps like ChronySync FTPSYnc and RSYNC !.. They are great for a small amount and simple file transfer !

As soon as you have a sophisticated folder structure and file names SMB simply fails !! and transfer gets interrupted with no way to skip or resume or rety ! Frustrating !

Firewire technology was another great innovation ! and=I miss Aperture so much

That was the only Professional app to work on photos !

And Apple nowadays dare to call them self Computers for photo/video professionals ! That has gone away with blessed Steve!.

I really hope they change their mind and resurrect AFP and professional apps.

Network file transfer work flawlessly via AFP.

I just pray that it wont go away completely.
