MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) "Continue holding for startup options"

Troubleshooting a MacBook pro for a friend. The macbook stopped booting to the OS entirely.

Tried re-installing the OS several times using re-install OS option via startup options.

Tried using an external thumb drive installation

Tried using Apple Configurator (reinstall/restore and revive) in DFU mode.

At first, I wasn't getting any chime until I used the configurator app.

Most of the time the install errors out at the very end with "Unable to set startup disk" An error occured while setting "MAC HD" as the startup disk. The operation couldn't be completed. (SDErrorDomain error 108)

I ran first aid on the disk + all partitions and they all check out fine.

No matter what I do, even if I hold the power button down, command+s, etc it just automatically boots to "Continue holding for startup options" ... even if I am not holding any buttons and simply press the power button to turn on.

I can't get it out of the loop. As far as I can remember the install went all the way through maybe once then restarted right back into startup options.

This macbook was barely used and my friend is really upset that this happened to such a new device.

We're lost at this point and not sure what to do. I would appreciate any help you guys can offer.

I’m pretty sure because the diagnostics key combo assigned to Silocons worked on mine (the one you advised me to use) but I will definitely double check and report back tomorrow when I’m back in front of the computer.

i wasn’t able to run diagnostics because the computer restarts to boot into it however I realized when I held the key combo it allowed diag to boot. No matter what if the key combo isn’t pressed it boots into recovery mode instead of anything else.

this also explains why my fresh reinstalls weren’t completing because when it tried to restart it went into recovery mode instead of continuing installation. I was finally able to complete the installation by waiting by the computer and holding down those keys when it was ready to reboot during the install.

Your appointment for an over-the counter evaluation, and anything that does not require PARTS is free at any Apple-owned store. But they are very busy, so you MUST have an appointment. Also the time may not be exclusive to you -- there may be others working through a long process like a re-install at the same time.

Apple-authorized Service Providers are free to charge an 'evaluation fee', intended to keep you from consuming their expensive technician time with frivolous requests. But if they do any compensated repairs (you pay or under warranty) then you can ask for a rebate of the evaluation fee.

The only way it boots up to the OS is if I hold control+option+right shift and power button down until I see the apple logo otherwise it boots to startup options. Power button works to power on mac but not to shutdown. Smh.

It seems like this is the key combo to reset the SMC? Is there a way to permanently reset the SMC because without this the mac auto boots me into recovery mode.

Its something else because even when trying to boot diagnostics the computer restarts and goes right back to startup options menu. I just confirmed again, only way it boots to OS is if I quickly press left ctrl+option + right shift (SMC reset) from what I see but I have to do it every single time the computer restarts or is booting or ill end up in startup options.

Its crazy that Touch-ID stopped working on two newer devices like mine... just like that. No damage, dropping, or anything. Is apple addressing this? Im sure im not the only one experiencing this. Ugh.

Ok, the instructions for the Silicon chip worked however when I hold cmd+D I see "Continue holding to start diagnostics" which I continue pressing but then the computer just restarts back to "continue holding for startup options" ... no matter what I do I cannot get out of this startup option prompt even if I am not pressing anything. Is there a way to undo this?

Just an update. I was attempting to get the mac into DFU mode as one last ditch effort. While holding power+ctrl, option, shift the I heard the chime and saw the apple logo with the loading bar for the first time (rather than the black startup options screen) .... then the touchbar lit up (first time seeing that turn on)

Next it went through the final steps of fresh install process (username, enable siri, etc) however the TOUCH ID prompt couldn't be setup as it says it failed. Could this be the root of my problem?

I did notice that once the mac powered on before in to startup options/recovery mode I could not use the power button to turn it off. I would have to click Shutdown or restart via recovery mode. It would turn on the mac but not shut it down. Does this shed light on why this could be happening?

Appreciate your help.

Running first aid now.

I can browse the internet.

All updates installed.

I will try to restart after first aid.

The power button is not working, even if i hold it down it doesn't shut the computer down.

additional: i just restarted and goes right back into continue holding to load startup options... when I click the hard drive to load the OS it goes back to startup options again.

Back at square one.

Hey sorry a bit under the weather.

Regarding the SMC chip / command that is what I have been reading also but its the only key combo that allows my macbook to bypass recovering mode and boot into the Operating system.

I am sure there is something to it. Is there a way to find out what exactly ctrl+option and right shift does on our silicon m1 macbooks? I have tried literally everything else to no avail.
