It works on M Series Mac, just download the "HP easy start" app from HP.com connect your printer, and wait for a while, the app will find your printer, download the driver, and will work.

HP printer setup (Mac PostScript and PCL drivers)

If your printer does not support Apple AirPrint, or a full-feature driver is unavailable, install a generic driver for basic printing functionality in macOS.

  1. Connect the printer to the Mac with a USB cable or to the same local network the Mac is connected to.
  2. Click the Spotlight icon  to search for and open Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax or the Add button .
  4. In the Add Printer window, select your printer from the Default tab, or enter the printer IP address on the IP tab .
  5. From the Use menu, select Generic PCL Printer, or if the PCL driver is not listed select Generic PostScript Printer.
  6. Add the printer to complete the setup.

Additional print driver options might be available at HP Software and Driver Downloads.

First, this is an issue you should check on HP support for that specific model.

I tend to use software from printer provider (in my case Brother) rather than leaving the app store settle this - not necessarily wrong to do so, but at least you will get the idea if HP did its job for newer macOS. Site will also tell you if there are features not limited (in case of multifunction printer) with newer OS version, firmware update that might be necessary, and so on.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that but it's gook language to me.

Trying to get Help from HP for this issue is impossible unless I'm missing a link to a chat line. None of their preset help answers relate to this issue.

I have followed their installation of the HP Smart app and the printer appears to be installed but will not connect.

My simple question is this:

Does the HP LaserJetProMFP M28a need a network connection or will it work solely with a USB cable on OS 13.6.3 ?

A link to HP where I can post that question without it robotically diverting to a spurious reply would be welcome.

Well, Thanks to all who replied.

I've tried every available route through the HP sites to download drivers, HP Smart etc. Trying to print I can get as far as bringing up the print queue which has a warning triangle on it and obviously does not print. The message indicates the printer is off line.

I really believe the Mac mini cannot handle a USB only printer.

I.ve connected my HP ink jet to the Mini and it works OK but ONLY if the usb AND the wireless are connected/turned on.

Out of interest there are several other niggling issues with Ventura which are really annoying. I could not log into one website until I tried it in Administrator mode; it worked and then was available in user mode.

Oh for the days when computers had just the things you needed and not the plethora of complicated junk you have to have.....or is there a filleted version of MAC OS?
