Color in complications of Apple Watch Modular faces

Due to a problem with Apple Pay, Apple Support had me unpair my watch, then repair it with manual setup. This solved the problem but wiped out my watch face. It was the modular watch face. My complications displayed in color and the example of a Modular face at Apple Watch faces and their features - Apple Support

shows the complications in color. But whatever I do to use the Modular watch face results in monochrome displays of the complications. Very difficult to read. What am I doing wrong?
