Hi, I ran into this issue again last night, and all the threads on every sight seem to be inconclusive.

After repairing all the disks in recovery mode and booting in safe mode didn't work, I ended up just leaving it shut down overnight, and then this morning rebooted finder after turning the laptop back on and making sure Google Drive sync was off.

The files saved and worked again, until I un-paused google drive sync again, and the errors reappeared. It turns out there are other threads about this specifically google drive related issue, but they have not been addressed: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253541530?sortBy=best

I suspect the solution may be having an option to turn off Pages autosave somehow, or Google changing how it treats .pages files, but either way wanted to log my findings here for future reference so people don't run into the same issue and get confused as to what's causing it.

Hope this issue gets addressed by one or both parties soon.

Pages documents, being zipped and renamed archives, are not compatible with Google Drive. If you were to double-click one there, unlike Microsoft documents which would just open in Google Docs, Drive would attempt to unzip the Pages document and in so doing — destroy it.

Apple designed Pages to be used on iCloud Drive, a local Mac startup drive, a mounted drive, or network share with a compatible filesystem. If Pages autosave is not working for you over the Internet to Google Drive, the reason is in the preceding sentence. You cannot disable autosave in just Pages, it would need to be disabled in every Apple application on the Mac that uses it via System Settings/Preferences.

And I do not picture Apple's Time Machine backing up Google Drive to a locally mounted hard drive so you could recover an accidentally deleted document, or an older version of it. But then again, although I have a Google Drive account, I don't store production documents on it.
