Setting up an IPad

I’m going to purchase an iPad for the first time. When I set up the device for the first time and sign in with my Apple ID, will all of my content from my phone automatically be transferred to my iPad? I don’t think I want it to be? I’m concerned about immediately filling up my device storage if everything automatically transfers. I’m new to this, can anyone explain?
