So presumably this Mac won’t boot and you’re in Recovery?
Disk Utility won’t show the serial number.
If the MacBook was previously associated with your Apple ID, log into AppleID.Apple.Com and look under the Devices tab.
If not, maybe Terminal (which is available in some versions of Recovery) has it. (I have no way to test this here.) In newer macOS versions and with full macOS running, the serial number is available in Terminal here:
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType
Any original purchase paperwork should have the serial number, too.
And the serial number is located on the bottom, in fine print.
