Software Update checking continually

My software update section just continually says "checking for updates", but nothing happens. I'm on a imac Retina 4k, 21.5", 2019 and running Catalina 10.15.7. I'd like to update my OS.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

You might want to boot in to the safe mode and perform the update from there

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.
  4. On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.
