Why is the name I am sending a text message to showing up on my Mac in red? I can message the person from my iPhone but not my Mac computer.

Google search suggests that it means that you're trying to send messages to someone who doesn't have iMessage, without the aid of an iPhone.

Text messages – as opposed to iMessages – are a cell phone thing. Your Mac is not a cell phone and cannot send or receive them except with help from an iPhone.
