I believe iTunes only supports music purchased from Apple. Correct?
How do I copy my audio CDs to iMac?
I have Apple's super drive, but it's USB A, so there is no port on the iMac to which I can connect. I assume I will need an adapter. What is the optimal port to which I should connect?

Not correct. You can add most formats to the music app, most notable exclusionFLAC.

When I grow up I will write an encoder that produces output that is not convertible by any known software; I won't make any money by having people buy files from me, but...the intellectual satisfaction!! At the moment I am working on invisible photographs - see attached.

You can’t covert FLAC in the music app. You will need a separate app such as XLD or Fission.
