Compressing files now leaves me with original plus Zip folder

Hi - it's some time since I compressed files on my Mac but I had a few folders that I wanted to archive. So I compressed the files and was then left with the new Zip folder as well as the original folder. I don't remember that from before, I thought all I was left with was the new Zip folder. Has the system duplicated the files and should I delete the original folder and contents? It seems a bit counter-intuitive to leave it in all its unzipped glory on my desktop!

Thanks

WG
