Compressing files now leaves me with original plus Zip folder

FWIW, that's normal. If you don't want to keep the uncompressed files/folders, feel free to delete them.

It's not weird. It's always worked that way. Apple doesn't know why you want to compress the files.

I often compress files before sending them to someone. I want both the compressed file -- to send -- and the originals left in situ.

Weird or not, macOS from the beginning produced a separate zip container with the contents of the files you chose to compress — and the original files remaining in the Finder.

If in the Finder, you can use a utility named zipinfo to peer into the zip container.

man zipinfo
zipinfo -m some.zip

Most people compress files/folders they are sending or to save space files take up if they don't need regular access to. It wouldn't make much sense to have to uncompress them each time you want to use them

I almost exclusively work in Icon view and when I slip into Column View (⌘3), my selected zip files do not expand as you have shown in your example, and my zip icons are plain even with show icon preview enabled. What created your zip files?

Well, the screen shot is from Monterey. I just right clicked on a folder and chose "Compress <name>". I do have The Unarchiver installed. Maybe that's why. I'll check a Mac without it installed and see.

Nope. Doesn't work in Sonoma, even with the Unarchiver installed.

Sonoma 14.2.1 is my daily driver (M2 mini Pro) and the basis for my original post of column view not working for a Zip file. The winter storm that I am sending your way is in full force right now…🥶
