Photo editing and OS upgrades

I am using a 2018 MacBook Pro for photo editing 90% of my time. I have zero need for widgets, gaming, or all the stuff Apple is gushing about. should I upgrade from OS 12.6.3 to 14? will that degrade my photo-editing experince?

Do you still have Aperture or iPhoto Libraries that need migrating to Photos or another application? If yes, you should create Photos Libraries from them to save your albums and the structure of the library. After the upgrade to Sonoma it will no longer be possible to convert iPhoto or Aperture Libraries to Photos Libraries. You can just import the media from the old old libraries, but not save the structure.

Some things that have changed in Photos on Sonoma: https://www.apple.com/macos/sonoma/pdf/macOS_All_New_Features.PDF

Copy and paste of adjustments is slightly different from before:

  • Copied and pasted edits are now intelligently adapted to match the exposure and the whotebalance between the photos. That can be confusing.

Changes in Ventura: macOS Ventura - New Features - Apple (KZ)

Ventura introduced the Shared iCloud Photos Library and more security features.

We can finally turn off the featured content (Memories and more),

The Hidden album and the Recently Deleted album can now be locked, which may be slowing down your your work when you try to manage the Photos Library.

The media browser has been change considerably. Some external apps can no longer see the albums, when they try to access photos in the Photos Library.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this post, but I hadn't heard this. Do you mean that operations slow down, or just that it's a pain and takes time to unlock those albums when you need them? I'd be happy to unlock those is it speeds up editing!

Richard, I meant that it is just a pain to have to unlock the trash every time we delete a photo and want to ensure, that we did not accidentally trash more photos than we intended to. When we delete items in Photos, there may be more photos selected than we can see without out scrolling the current view.

I am always checking the Trash right after deleting photos, while I still remember what I wanted to delete. Weeding out our photos is now much more work.

It is a pity, that we cannot lock the Trash and the Hidden album separately.

You can still use external editors. But select the photos in the Photos.app and pass the photos directly from Photos to the external editor.

  • If the external editor offers photo editing extensions install them, then call the external editor from the "Edit" pane in Photos and use the button with the three dots in the toolbar.
  • If the external editor does not offer extensions, use the menu "Image > Edit with " and select your editor there.

Calling the editor directly from Photos has many advantages:

  • The edited version can be saved back to Photos as a new version.
  • You can use Photos to find the image.
  • You can be sure, that the photo will be sent to the editor at the best possible quality. When we use the media browser to access the photos, we might get downsized previews, optimized for sharing, not for editing.
