Keychain password

I can open my keychain, but when I click "show password" it asks me for a Keychain password. I do not have a password on the Mac account. I leave the keychain blank and press return. The dialog just disappears but the password does not show. However If I put a password on the Mac login account, the keychain dialog then accepts this password. So is it not possible to open the keychain unless you have a password active on the login account?

Every Mac operating system requires that when we set up the OS we create (1) an Apple password and (2) a Mac password. The requirement to enter the Mac password when starting up can be disabled in Disk Utility. (It will then be automatically entered.) This same password is needed to access the keychain as well as for making certain other changes. That's just how it is.
