While ID.me does use facial recognition for verification, the IRS specifically does not allow the use of your iPhone camera for the face scan. ID.me offers alternative verification methods for accessing IRS services without using your phone camera, including:

  1. You can connect with an ID.me agent for a live video interview where they will guide you through the verification process without using facial recognition software. This option ensures your biometric data is not analyzed.
  2. You can upload high-quality scans of your government-issued ID and a selfie holding the ID to verify your identity.

Here's how to access these alternatives:

  • During the ID.me verification process: Look for the option to "Skip Facial Scan" or "Choose a different way to verify." This should lead you to the alternative methods.
  • ID.me website: Go to the "Help" section of the ID.me website and search for "alternative verification methods" or "IRS verification without facial scan
