"hide my email" also hides my passwords for no good reason

Wife used "Hide my Email" when setting up an Evite account. She now wants to share that account with me. We can see the @privaterelay.appleid.com email address in Evite's system, but cannot locate the corresponding password anywhere on any of her devices.

Obviously Apple is storing the password somewhere. But apparently that somewhere is not where any of her other passwords are stored, which is entirely asinine. Keeping my email address a secret should not mean I don't get to know my own corresponding password.

She tried resetting her password, but it didn't stick. Gave me the new password and it refused to let me log in with her private relay address or her main address.

You are correct that they are not normally stored at the Hide My Email setting. I save them there in the Notes field so I can manage all in that location. They are saved in Settings > Passwords. Not sure why you are not seeing them there. I have posted the screen shots of both the Hide My Email setting and the Password setting for one of my sites that I use Hide My Email. The password is not visible in the Screenshot, but is visible when you tap on it.

Settings > [name on top] > iCloud > Hide My Email. The Notes field shows where I save the password.

Settings > Passwords. This is where your password should be saved and where is saves on my device. The password will just show dots, but I can tap on it to reveal the actual password.

Sorry for the misinformation. I looked on my device and saw the password in the Notes field of the Hide My Email settings, forgetting that I put them there to manage only the Hide My Email accounts.

No it is not! I have seen this all over these forums, but this is simply NOT the case. Please stop giving out this answer in response to this particular question.

The emails addresses are there, but the passwords are not.

If I tap on an entry, I see:

  • The app (evite)
  • Hide My Email (*@privaterelay.appleid.com)
  • Forward To (main iCloud account, along with a switch for turning forwarding on/off)
  • Text indicating when the email address was created, with a "learn more" link
  • Manage Settings button

The Manage settings button brings up a searchable list of "Hide my email accounts" if I click on any of them, it brings me back to the same view described above (App; relay address; forward address; creation date; and Manage settings button). The button is a bit of an oroboros, as you can keep tapping the same app, then the manage settings, then the app, then the manage settings, ad infinitum. Not sure what use it has, but it certainly does not have the password.

I don't think it makes a difference whether or not one using private relay.

My wife used private relay for a little while, but I have not. Neither of our "hide my email" accounts are stored in our respective keychains. I have some that end in @iCloud.com, and those ones do not appear in the keychain app or passwords settings menu either.

To my knowledge I have never used private relay, and yet some of my autogenerated email accounts are still ending with "@privaterelay.appleid.com". If I had to guess, they started using that for all new disposable email account names after the private relay feature was rolled out, regardless of whether or not that feature was actually active on a users account.

In any case, Apple has created a feature that hides your email address from websites (good), but also hides your password for those accounts from you (bad) and there is no mechanism of which I am aware by which someone can access those passwords to change or update them (Stupidly Awful).

I was just talking about Hide My Email. Private Relay is an additional service provided with iCloud+ with different options. I do not have Private Relay turned on for my iCloud+ account, only Hide My Email, so maybe someone that uses both services will be able to chime in. Apparently with both services on, the assigned email is a "@privaterelay" address and when just using Hide My Email it assigns a "@iCloud" address.

I think we are talking about two different things.

your screenshot shows an email address that does NOT end in @privaterelay.applied.com. That suggests you custom created your alternate email address. That it was not auto-generated by apple when clicking the “continue with apple” button when setting up the account.

when done manually, it will store like any other credential. An entry is created in keychain database as normal.

When auto-generated by apple via the “Hide my Email” feature, it does something else with the password. It obviously is saving it somewhere. It just isn’t clear where that is.

unless you are seeing hidden email addresses containing the “privaterelay.applied.com” tail in your keychain. If so, then it is doing something different for you than for me.
