Automatic nonsensical subtitles on my MacBook Air

I'm watching an online class on Psyflix, and it's impossible to follow because of the subs. The spoken language is Dutch and somehow my Mac is translating in nonsensical words and sentences. I've tried to search for auto subs but can't seem to find anything online. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

I've also asked the organization itself, but my fellow students without a Mac don't have this problem.

Thank you so much for this extensive reply. I have tried a number of options but to no avail.

I'm using Safari to watch the video, there's no possibility to download and use, for instance, QuickTime.

It really looks like a live captioning gone wrong, but on my MacBook Air 13″ with macOS 14.1.1, it shouldn't be possible if I read correctly. The option for Live captioning also doesn't show in my settings.

Your sentence ' Play web videos in Safari', got me thinking to try another browser.

Ha, I downloaded Firefox and the problem is solved! Still no idea why Safari is auto-subbing and where I could turn it off but I will use Firefox from now on.

Thanks again! :)

Re: "Automatic nonsensical subtitles : Anyone have an idea how to fix this?"

Seems that Psyflix would normally be the best way of obtaining support, so sorry your efforts were not rewarded.

Wondering which Mac app you use to view the videos ...

Seems there are various options, yet they may or may not work in your particular circumstance.

✽ Eg: If you use QuickTime player, that has a few options for subtites:

  1. In the QuickTime Player app on your Mac.
  2. Open a movie that has subtitles or captions, then do any of the following:
    • View subtitles: Choose View > Subtitles, then choose a language. You can also click the Subtitles button in the playback controls (or press and hold the Subtitles button in the Touch Bar) to see a list of available options.
    • View closed captions: Choose View > Show Closed Captioning

Above is from: QuickTime Player User Guide for Mac - Apple Support

Play web videos in Safari on Mac - Apple Support says you may be able to stream the video to a TV set ...

not sure if your TV may handle subtitles any differently.

Tip: If your Mac supports it, you can turn on live captioning of audio so you can follow along more easily with conversations, audio and video. (Live Captions is currently in beta. Live Captions is available only on Mac computers with Apple silicon, and is not available in all languages, countries or regions.)

See Use Live Captions.

Note: The first time you turn on Live Captions, language data is downloaded to your Mac.

You must be connected to the internet.

✽ Else: you can try: Use subtitles and closed captions on Mac - Apple Support

or

Change Captions settings for accessibility on Mac - Apple Support

✽ There are online sites that claim you can upload your video for subtitles to be added

I do not know how effective they are, or just what is involved:

Eg: Clideo / Kapwing / flixier

Also: Seems there are various "subtitle players" available for download:

Check first for compatibly with your Mac: Eg: Online review of some subtitle players

Have not used any online sites or subtitle players myself, so can not recommend any. It is "user-beware".
