move music from iphone 6 to new iphone 13

I setup a new iPhone 13 using a backup of an old iPhone 6. Fine everything works (almost).

New iPhone 13 has almost no music on it. That is, 90% of the music on the iPhone 6 is not on the iPhone 13. Should it be?

iPhone 6 was synced with iTunes on an old macbook 2007. iPhone 13 won't connect to that iTunes (latest for this macbook - iTunes 12.8.3). So can't get to the music on laptop.

The old macbook iTunes DOES try to download a small update to allow iPhone 13 connection but after 10 minutes it fails with a message "phone Apple support". (will try this - not hopeful)

Tried connecting iPhone 6 to my 2017 iMac to copy music to it ready to sync onto new iPhone 13. Created a new (empty) music library.

Connected iPhone 6 and can see all the old music on the iPhone 6.

When I try to sync a message says all music on the iPhone 6 will be erased and replaced. I have NO other options.

Erased and replaced by what? Nothing? My music in my library?

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

FYI

- not subscribed to Apple streaming Music.

- music on the old iPhone 6 is sourced from Apple store and ripped CDs.

The basic manual synchronization model – which dates from iPod days – is that synchronization is one-way. From the master media (iTunes / Music / TV) library on a particular Mac or PC, to the iPhone / iPad / iPod.

Each time you synchronize, you replace the entire selection on the iPhone / iPad / iPod with the new selection from the computer. (Conceptually. If the system sees that a song that is part of the new selection is already present on the iPhone / iPad / iPod, it doesn't actually have to erase it and copy it again.)

You transferred the iPhone to a new computer that has an empty music library. Q.E.D. the selection of media items on that computer must be empty. If you tell the computer that it can go ahead and synchronize, it will erase ALL of the music on your iPhone and replace it with the new selection (that is, to say, no music at all).

The idea is that you're supposed to protect and preserve the music library on your computer. If you didn't do that, you're a bit up the creek without a paddle.

There are third-party applications whose vendors claim they can transfer music from iPhones / iPads / iPods back to Macs and PCs. In the case of music purchased from the iTunes Store, you might be offered a chance to download it again. And for music from your own CDs, you could re-import the music from your CDs.

Thanks Servant of Cats,

Yep you are correct. Apple Support and I confirmed what you said.

Also confirmed that there is now NO way of connecting an iPhone 13 to the old macbook.

So I copied all the music on the old macbook (same as on the old iPhone 6) to the new music library, in a separate user login account, on my 2017 iMac via memory stick.

The iPhone 13 (not mine) will connect and sync with this library just fine.

Not desirable as the owner of the iPhone 13 has to use my iMac until they buy a new macbook (at $1,000+ not any time soon. Sigh!).

Using iCloud with the iPhone 13 would help with backups and some syncing functions, but NOT with ripping music on new CDs onto the iPhone 13 (yes, there is still heaps of new music on CDs NOT in any online stores). Sigh!

My friend is "Limping along" OK for now.

Many thanks again Cat Slave.

Hey Servant of Cats,

re "High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.3 should be enough to manage an iPhone running iOS 17 – but as you have found out, actual experience may differ."
Apple Support confirmed "No". My friend actually has a 2011 Macbook (not 2007 as I said). Sierra is the last OS that will run on it. iTunes 12.8.3 is the last iTunes that will run on it.

  • Sierra (10.12.*) is not the last OS that will run on a 2011 MacBook Air or Pro. High Sierra (10.13.*) is.
  • Judging by the iTunes download page, the latest version of iTunes for Sierra is 12.8.2. 12.8.3 is a version for High Sierra. (Otherwise, why would there be instructions for 10.12 users to download version 12.8.2?)

This combo will NOT allow a cable connected ios17 device(iPhone 13) to even be detected by the Macbook.

  • My understanding is that you can manage iPhones running iOS 16, or earlier, with a Mac that is running OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan) or better.
  • As of the iPhone 15s (which shipped with iOS 17), the specifications changed. The new requirement for the Mac is High Sierra or better. The implication is that this is a new requirement for any iPhone running iOS 17.
  • Thus if your friend is running (low) Sierra, that would explain why the iPhone is not detected.

Your friend can get the High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.3 installers here. (High Sierra first, then iTunes 12.8.3 if the High Sierra upgrade doesn't already come with it.)

You'll need to get a new compute or mac to get the latest iTunes, then copy your itunes library to the new pc so you can sync music to your 13.

I'm pretty sure that iTunes 12.8.3 requires High Sierra - and that a 2007 MacBook can't run anything higher than Lion. So did you mean that your friend has a 2017 machine running High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.3?

High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.3 should be enough to manage an iPhone running iOS 17 – but as you have found out, actual experience may differ.

That may not be the end of the story.

  • A 2017 MacBook Air would be able to upgrade to Monterey, but no further. A 2017 MacBook or MacBook Pro would be able to upgrade to Ventura, but no further. Newer versions of macOS might not have an issue with managing the iPhone. Even a one-step upgrade to Mojave might help.

Note:

there are notes on Apple's web sites that say there is a minor specialised update for the Macbook? (iPhone 13?) that will allow connectivity.

Alas this ONLY applies to connecting an IOS17 device to iTunes in Windows. (yuk! ha ha )

Soooo Razmee209 (above) is correct. Only a later mac computer will work with ios17.

If only the iPhone Music App could import .mp3 files (from an email etc.). Sigh!

Hey Servant of Cats,

an up to date summary with pictures...

2011 Macbook is running High Sierra 10.13.6, iPhone 13 running ios17, iTunes 12.8.3

No connectivity.

======================

When I plug the iPhone 13 via usb cable into the macbook a small update is required

(this is as expected):

refer 1st pic

When I click on install I get an error:

refer 2nd pic

Apple Support (multiple engineers) tell me that the install fails as there is NO such S/W update for 2011 macbook / iPhone 17.

(only for the old Windows iTunes version and iPhone 17)

The "Network problem" message is spurious i.e. due to there being no mac S/W found.

An old iPhone 6 connects just fine.

I just can't use iPhone 17 with 2011 macbook .

Thanks but!

Jan 19, 2024 5:31 PM in response to Servant of Cats

sorry was relying on memory of my friends system.

It WAS updated to the latest OS (if that’s High Sierra then it’s running High Sierra) - latest OS installed was confirmed by Apple Support.

IOS 17 iPhone 13 is NOT even detected by High Sierra. Confirmed by me and Apple Support (multiple support staff) via screen share.

But I WILL check again!

Thanks for all your time.
