Apple TV remote stopped working

My apple TV remote stopped working. I tried unplugging the Apple TV box. I tried restarting the remote by pressing the tv key and down button. I charged the remote over night. Nothing has worked. Do I need to buy a new remote? I am currently using my phone as a remote but my husband, who is not particularly tech savvy, really hates using his phone. I need a solution. Is there something else I can try or should I just buy a new remote? TIA
