Mute button on new Macbook Pro Apple M2

I just bought a Macbook Pro last year and after the last two updates -- I'm on Sonoma 14.2.1 -- the Mute feature keeps going off and on. I've checked my Sound settings, did a reset (Shift + Ctrl + Option + Power) and to no avail.

I'm about to lose my proverbial you-know-what as I have three interviews this week, and I don't want to have to keep turning the volume back on in the middle of a meeting. I've searched this community for answers and I'm getting nothing helpful.
