QUESTIONS

=========================

#1- can my iMac be used as a screen by connecting an apple TV box to it or DVD player, etc… ?

#2- can i transfer pictures and music from my old imac to a newer ipad ?

FYI-My iMac music on imac’s itunes includes both Apple purchased music and previously purchased music that was downloaded into itunes music on iMac.

I tried connecting different newer ipads (os 8th generation, ipad air 2) with “lightning to usb cable” and i do get the following popup message :

I do click “Trust” then I try to go into “Finder” but nothing happens…….I cannot see my ipad within imac Finder, nor can i see my imac on my ipad’s side.

#3-If transferring my old pictures and music cannot be done via direct cable (as I have tried above) and can only be done by connecting an external hard drive to my old iMac (then saving my data onto this external HD)…….

can someone please explain the best way to do all of this:

(what mac friendly external hd to buy (ssd or non ssd), can external hd then be connected to ipad to download data onto ipad? ….. how to upload all data onto external hard drive from imac then how to download data onto an ipad (can i go directly from external hd to ipad or do i need windows OS to upload to icloud (I really would prefer avoiding this if possible)….. i don’t have a macbook or another imac.

**Please reach out if you are able to offer insights and need more info from me.

***I would be very grateful if SIMPLE instructions/ideas/advice are given (if possible)….

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ANY HELP.

🙂

One way I believe you can do this is by using the same Apple ID on the old Mac and the new iPad. By using iCloud to store pictures and your Music on both the old and new device, you will be able to see and use those items on both the Mac and the iPad.

However, for music that was not purchased through Apple but is still part of your Mac's Music Library, you may have to transfer those through Sync via iTunes on your Mac. That said, I believe for this to work with the new iPad you will need 10.11.6 (10.6.8 is too old), which you can download and install from

Also see my last link below for a different approach using an external drive.

rkaufmann's advice is correct but applies to using Migration Assistant to move to a new Mac, but that does not apply to a new iPad, for which Migration Assistant cannot be used (I believe).

See also this Apple article about transferring files to an iPad from an external drive:

This could be another way to move files (music, photo ...) from the Mac to the iPad versus using iCloud.

Have you reviewed Transfer files using an external storage device, a file server, or a cloud storage service on iPad - Apple Support

I would clone the iMac to an External Hard Disk one like I suggested using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner and then use the suggestions in the link noted above.

  1. No
  2. Yes, use Migration Assistant by connecting the old Mac's Time Machine External Hard Disk to the new Mac. Then launch MA by navigating to Applications - Utilities - Migration Assistant.
  3. See #2
  4. Most experienced users on these forums prefer the following External Hard Disk due to it's reasonable cost, high reliability and the service provided by the vendor.
