I had to do a clean install, which took me from Big Sur to Sonoma. Not impressed. A lot is gone, but that's not my issue.
The items on the desktop are gigantic. Nothing I can tweak in Settings helps. Below is a screenshot of FaceTime in Sonoma. Never had this issue previously. Any help would be appreciated.

Even if you're using a high screen resolution, the desktop icons are, by default, set to a rather large size.
Right click anywhere on the desktop and choose, Show View Options. Change the Icon size slider to your preferred size.

Check in System Setting >> Display
Are you using the Default Display Setting for the Monitor ?
Or have you used different setting that caused everything to be " gigantic " ?
I had this happen a few times when awaking from sleep and/or tuning on/off the mouse. I went to display settings and it was set to "Default". But if I set it to some other size and then back to 'Default' it returned to normal size.

Just curious, how is the FaceTime screen shot supposed to show the huge icons on the Desktop?
What do you mean by “a lot is gone”? If anything there should be many more features available in Sonoma than Big Sur. Tell us what’s “gone”.
