When I am in an App there is a black “box” on the top of my screen between the time (top LHS) and signal, wifi and battery life icons (top RHS). I have an iPhone 13 mini and it takes up precious screen space.
I don’t think it’s an error but it is annoying. Can it be got rid of?
When I take a screenshot it doesn’t show up but I have photos of exactly the same thing that I’ve found online.

Sorry… it is visible on home and locked screens. Just not on screenshots. When I’ve had a textured background and screenshot it the detail of what is where that box is now is included. Seems odd.
For instance, on this TV app the words ‘House of the Dragon’ were totally obscured by the black box but are clearly visible on the screenshot.
Because a screenshot doesn't take a picture of the physical screen, it takes a snapshot of what the video output is sending.
