Canoscan LIDE 100 not recognized on M3 14.2.1 but works fine on Intel i9 14.2.1

Hi

I am in the process of replacing my old MacBookPro i9 from 2018. My Canoscan LIDE 100 works fine here using the exact same cables. The OS on i9 has been upgraded a number of times and I cannot remember on which OS version I started but whatever was hot in 2019 was most likely it.

The i9 is now being replaced by a M3 and the M3 can see the LIDE 100 in "System Information" > "USB" but neither Image Capture sees it nor trying to add it as a scanner works. Rosetta is not installed on the M3.

The drivers I can find on Canons site are rather old.... I would prefer not to install all kinds of old and strange drivers to see if I can get this working.

I have looked at VueScan but I feel that this should work out of the box.

Suggestions?

Thank you for all the suggestions.

Having tried a few things:

  • Vuescan works without any problems.
  • All Canon drivers found do not work and all seem to require Rosetta (also drivers linked from here Driver for Canon LiDE 210 with my OS 12.0… - Apple Community)
  • This cannot be tested using VmWare or VirtualBuddy as usb devices cannot be accessed by the macOS virtualization layer and VmWare currently does not support virtualization of macOS (but might have similar restrictions). Parallels I have not tried.

You will need current (Fall 2023) Canon driver support for the LiDE 100 on macOS Sonoma, and failing that, the optional, free trial, and paid VueScan Professional supports this scanner without any Canon drivers necessary.

I was using an ancient Canon N650U scanner from the 1990's with VueScan Professional and even that relic worked fine on Sonoma. I spent $89 to purchase an LiDE 400 scanner for improved scanning specs and it is supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint technology, or VueScan Professional, without any Canon drivers. VueScan can actually perform OCR on scanned documents as it generates the PDF content.

I have never paid an upgrade fee for VueScan Professional to download current versions — since 2010.

In fairness to Vuescan, there were over 2 dozen update releases last year and while you are correct that many scanners were added there were also many, many improvements & fixes plus a number of significant enhancements esp. in auto cropping, crop controls, auto skew correction, edge fine tuning, hole punch removal, diagnostics & thumbnails.

For my part, I purchased the Professional Edition many years ago when it came with lifetime support. Vuescan is so good and has accumulated so many new features that I am voluntarily participating in their Vuescan Supporter Program. I have made good use of Vuescan for more than 20 years on every version of macOS since Panther, on every Mac I've owned and with 6 or 7 different scanners. It was about time to say thanks to Ed Hamrick for all the effort he puts into this product.

No software vendor can survive on single-sale perpetual licenses with forever support; it's not a sustainable economic model. That's why the market has moved to subscriptions.
