My photos appear as grey in the Photos app, almost all of them are like this, what is this?

Can you see the photos, when you tap one of them to open it?
You are seeing the gray squares, when Photos has not yet rendered thumbnails for them. This can happen, when your iPhone is running out of storage and cannot save the thumbnails, or if you are using iCloud Photos and Photos cannot connect to the internet to download the originals from iCloud.
