so I dropped my phone in a hot tub. It hadn't been backed up in almost a year according to my apple account. It still works but the screen is completely black. Help me recover my memories and contacts pleaseeeee

Make an appointment at the Apple Store or take the phone to an authorized Apple service shop to let them take a look at the phone.

Unfortunately, you should prepare yourself to probably hear the bad news that the phone cannot be repaired due to water damage.

It sounds like your definition of "works" is a bit different from mine...
If it "works" you should be able to plug it into your computer and back it up. If you can't do that, then it does not "work" and any data on it that was not backed up is effectively gone.
How can I recover files from an iPhone that does not work?
