USB-C to lightning adaptor compatibility with Lightning to 30-Pin adaptor

Apple have started selling an Official Apple USB-C to Lightning Adaptor that supports Audio/Charging and Data transfer to support connection with accessories. However, when connected with the Official Apple Lightning to 30-Pin adaptor it stops supporting Audio and only charges and syncs data. Apple support confirmed that this has been engineered that way. This strikes me as example of designed obsolescence and wondered if others have encountered this?
