iPhone XS forgot my passcode

This morning, my iPhone XS wanted my passcode to start. Not unusual. It was charging all night. I entered my passcode, and it was rejected repeatedly. I entered my passcode correctly. Then it began a series of lockouts of increasing time. I don't want to restore my iPhone - it takes too long. Why did this happen?
