Programs automatically open upon restart

When I restart my Mac mini (Sonoma 14.2.1), having closed all open programs, both Adobe and Apple programs open, requiring me to X out of about five screens before I can get to work. I can't find any Preferences settings that allow you to stop that from happening. Thank you for any ideas.

Also, Uncheck "Reopen windows when logging in" when you get the pop-up confirmation window when logging out, rebooting, or shutting down the Mac, otherwise if this setting is checked, then all apps & windows open at the time of logging out, restarting, shutting down will open again next time.

If I could answer it I wouldn't have posted ;-) It's a fresh default install, not a migration. Whatever the reason it shouldn't reopen apps on boot up if it's not set to do it.

Can not reproduce this issue on 1 M1, 1 M2 and 1 M3 machines all running Sonoma 14.5

Then have a few suggestions ;

Same issue here on a MacBook Air M2 2022 running 14.5. Apps that are NOT in the startup list open automatically at startup even when the checkbox in the shutdown prompt was left unchecked.

I noticed that this happens when I use the TouchID/Startup up button not when I use "Shutdown" from the Apple menu.

I also noticed that in the latter case the screen goes completely black immediately whereas in the former the screen turns dark grey for a few seconds before going black.

So when you are using the TouchID button to power off the laptop, you are holding it for about 10 seconds to force a power off? This is ill advised since you are forcing an improper shutdown which can corrupt the file system & perhaps even data in your files. macOS does tend to attempt to restore macOS to the previous state at the time of an improper shutdown.

My Sonoma is a fresh install and the suggestions do not work for me. I would call it a bug if a machine doesn't do what you instruct it to, you obviously have your own made up definition.

Hum and a question only the user can answer.

After " a fresh install "

Has the user ( you ) restored from a Previous Installation using Migration Assist to Setup Assist ?

Not too long ago if you momentarily pressed the power button you would have been presented with the shutdown pop-up confirmation prompt, but that changed with the introduction of the TouchID button I believe.

How about Control + Option + Command + Power Button? See this Apple article with some of the special macOS shortcut key commands:

I have the same issue. The apps reopening are not in the Startup folder and reopen apps on login is unchecked - go figure!

A -Using the two previous suggestions work on the 3 different Apple Machines all with macOS 14.5 Sonoma - Go figure.

Your computer must have a unique configuration that is out of the suggested setup

" This is one of a few bugs I'm finding in Sonoma. Hopefully the next update will fix a few things. "

A - As for " Bugs " .

A - Some people put out the " Bug " without really knowing what a bug is in terms of a Technical understanding what a Bug is.

A - A Bug would have to be found on a Fresh and Brand New Installation of Sonoma 14.5. Nothing Migrated from a previous installation and no Third Party Software installed

A - Then and then only would Apple even consider something to be a possible bug

A - Added, it would need to be repeatedly reproduced and reliable by Apple Software Engineers on their computers

A- Once all that is done, Apple may consider the unusual behaviours as a possible " Bug "
