External SSD not showing in macos

Hi. I've come into possion of a seagate 1TB ssd drive. The cable is USB-A, and im using a Macbook Pro M1 2020 with touchbar. I want to find and use this SSD, but am having issues.

When I plug it in, either through a USB-A to USB-c adaptor, or through my USB dock, nothing happens. I have checked in finder and finder settings and everything is checked and should show up. When i open disk utility, it remains on the loading screen indefinitely, unless I unplug the SSD, at which point it immediately loads. I've tried to format it through recovery mode, but the same issue happens - it opens disk utility, and doesnt load until i remove the SSD. The SSD was wiped but not reformatted the other day and is fully funcitonal. I think that it may still be formatted to windows in some way, and needs reformatting, im just wondering whether I can do that on my laptop? Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.2

What is the exact model of this external SSD and date of manufacture? I know that the v1 Samsung T5 SSDs had compatibility issues with the Apple Silicon Macs.

Within Disk Utility click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical drives appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Make sure to disconnect all other external devices in case one of them is causing a problem. Also, try booting into Safe Mode.

What version of macOS are you using?

Do you have another computer to test the external SSD?

If this is an old SSD, then it may have failed. Or the cable/adapter is bad or incompatible.
