Recovery from too-large iPhone Keyboard

We had successfully won through to controlling the text size. We made the keyboard so large we cannot see it all. It shows only digits, all except 3, 6, and 9. The Answer-the-Phone widget(?) is not visible. Cannot log on to the phone.

Recovery from this is not covered in the Iphone-for-Complete-Idiots book, as far as I can see.... Any advice?

iPhone SE, iOS 17

Am no expert in this area, yet your question does deserve a response! Below are a few things to try.

If you may be zoomed right in: Double-tap the screen with 3 fingers to zoom out.

Else: Wondering which settings you used, and which app you have open:

Eg: Try rotating the iPhone to landscape orientation ... does that help to fit the keyboard to the screen ?

If you can tap anywhere outside the keyboard you will let iPhone know you've finished with the keyboard.

Try the "typing with one hand" controls

  1. See if you can Touch and hold or (down below the numbers).
  2. Tap one of the keyboard layouts. (For example, choose to move the keyboard to the right side of the screen.)
  3. To center the keyboard again, tap the right or left edge of the keyboard.

Or: Can you swipe up the screen to access just above the Keyboard numbers and letters ?

if so, you can then swipe right down from just above the keyboard to hide the keyboard.

All the best :-)

I need to investigate your responses -- they show territory I was not aware of.

I bumbled into:

(1) briefly press the volume-up button

(2) then briefly press the volume-down button

(3) then hold down the on-off key until the Apple symbol shows (I think I got this right)

Then ignore the phone for 15 minutes or so. If you try to awaken it, you get a message about how it's unavailable -- try again in 5 minutes. Eventually the phone presented itself in a usable configuration.

The theoretical context for this is Avoid Zoom!

Seems you discovered instructions on how to "force restart" your iPhone.

Apple Support's article: How to: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Force restarting, (or just restarting Restart your iPhone - Apple Support) would let you access the settings again.

Orientation: If you just rotate your iPhone to landscape while typing, the keyboard will also rotate. This makes the buttons bigger and the keyboard wider.

You can avoid Zoom if you wish, or you might want to learn more about how Zoom works so you can be more in control:
