How are we to handle ProRes on our Mac? Photos App is definitely NOT it.

I'm super happy with my Mac Studio with all its power and capabilities, also with the new iPhone 15 with ProRes 4K capabilities. I'm a content creator and have been using Apple exclusively for 4 years now. I've made over 400 YouTube videos using an iPhone 12 with fantastic results and now adding ProRes is going to be great... and then the massive disappointment.

The Mac OS more importantly the photos app that I've been using to store all my recordings (I do outdoor content so I need that GPS meta data to even know where I've recorded anything) and manage the location of my shoots has all but failed. It's definitely not my $12k computer and its 100% the app that hasn't been updated in years most likely. So I need an app that works like photos with access to a map & location of my content. Here's a list of issues with ProRes & Photos App i've found so far.

  1. Uploading ProRes video from my iPhone to the database usually takes 45 to 100 minutes. I can upload it into a directory in under a minute usually.
  2. The ProRes video won't even preview in the photos app, it stutters like if my computer doesn't have enough processing power to read the file (its the APP!)
  3. You cannot drag & drop from photos app to another software. I've used this method with FCPX for years and now it just wont work. I have to drag & drop to a folder, import the video to FCPX then delete it later.

Research has found no other apps I can use that does similar work... is Apple going to fix this obvious dud of an app that now cannot handle RAW video files?

No one here has any idea what plans Apple has or may not have for anything. We're all just users like yourself. If you have a feature request:

I would comment though that there may be a clue in the name ProRes, a professional grade codec and you're trying to manage it with a freebie consumer level app. As you say, Final Cut PRO X manages the material easily. Maybe you need a different app.
