Macbook Air M1 Grey screen

When I turn on my Mac, a grey screen appears. I tried entering recovery mode by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the device. However, when I press and hold the power button again to enter recovery mode, nothing happens, and the screen remains grey.

Make sure to disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

Here is an Apple article with instructions for access the Startup Options of an Apple Silicon Mac...just make sure you are following them exactly. Try them multiple times since it can be hard to determine the state of the Mac when trying to force a power off. If the laptop is powered on, try pressing the Caps Lock key so it lights up so when you hold the power button for 10 seconds you will see when the laptop powers off when the Caps Lock LED goes dark.

If you cannot access the Startup Options screen, then you can try performing a DFU firmware "Revive". Unfortunately this process requires access to another Mac running macOS 14.x unless you have already downloaded an older version of Apple Configurator 2 (v2.16 or earlier) which would only require access to another Mac running macOS 12.4+.

FYI, I've never seen a gray screen on an Apple Silicon Mac during power on or startup, so I'm not sure what is going on here. My guess is you likely have a hardware issue of some sort which will require a repair.

I hope you have good backups since it is probably impossible to make a backup now.

I have a grey screen. My Mac did an update but then blacked out at once while I was on a google call.

What update and from what version to what version? macOS update or an app update? If an app update, again which app and versions are involved?

Can you boot your Mac at all? Can you access the Apple Silicon Mac's recovery mode Options screen?

If so, then you have a different issue than the OP who cannot do this on their laptop. If you can do this, then try booting into Safe Mode.

You should probably start your own thread since your issue may not be exactly the same as the OP's and if the issues are different, it will just confuse everyone reading this thread. If you can boot your Mac normally or into Safe Mode, then run the third party app EtreCheck and post the report using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. If you can do this or access the Options boot screen, then please start your own thread since it would indicate your issue is different than the OPs since they cannot do any of this with their Mac. When starting your own thread, please provide the answers to the questions I've asked and posting an EtreCheck if possible.
