I purchased an LG ultra slim portable DVD writer that says it is Mac compatible. However, the connector cord has an "old" Apple end - is there an adaptor that works so that I can connect this to my iMac thunderbolt 4 port?

Yes, there is an adapter. You'll be looking for a usb-c to usb-a adapter or cable.

Another option might be to get a USB-C to Micro USB 3.0 adapter cable.

With any adapter, check data transfer speed. Some only support USB 2.0 speed, and some whose descriptions include the word "charging" might not carry data at all.
