Recently received MacBook Pro 2009 15inch from roommates wife. After erasing previous data and an attempt to reinstall maverick i am prompt to log in to proceed with installation but at log in im told connection error.
do i find download for that year maverick os on to usb and see it it uploads at start up?

That MacBook shipped with a set of OS X reinstallation DVDs. They are very machine specific and to be used for just such an occasion. Ask you roomie's wife if she still has them.
Try to install the newest macOS version the laptop can be upgraded to; 10.11 El Capitan.

You best shot at this may be to create a bootable usb installer for El Capitan. The guidance is in the above link. However, the caveat here is that you must use a Mac that is capable of running El Capitan in order to create that bootable usb flash drive. That means one of similar vintage; 2007-2015.
