Unable to log in with apple ID on Sonoma 14.2.1

I recently upgraded my machine to Mac OS Sonoma 14.2.1 and lost the ability to sign in with my apple ID. I know I have the correct password and login, as I'm able to sign in via the browser. But when I go to settings, I am unable to access my iCloud account.

When I attempt to log in, I add my email. Then my password. Then the settings panel looks like it's doing something but instead spits me back out to add my email again instead of going through the 2FA flow where I'd normally get a code to my phone...

I thought it was just a weird fluke but then I upgraded my work computer to 14.2.1 and the same thing happened. It's not the end of the world, but it is super annoying!

Anyone figure out how to get out of this **** loop?

Did some work this morning on the issue with Ethernet and not being able to connect to iTunes or AppStore using macOS 14.2.1.

i plugged in the Ethernet cable tested authentication and it failed.

i next disabled WiFi via network settings menu.

deleted the Ethernet service.

rebooted

went back into network setting and added a new service selected Ethernet and tested login to iTunes and AppStore and it works.

why no clue other than assuming something on the profile related to Ethernet was corrupt or became misconfigured somehow.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately I don’t know if a feedback report was done or not. After 6 hours of calls and disconnects I was just happy for my Mac to be working again.

with that said, I found out a day later that when I switched my Mac back to ethernet I could not connect to iTunes or the AppStore. And switching to WiFi allowed the authentication to work properly.

so it is very likely that something in my Ethernet config needs to be removed or reset via script or something. unfortunately, I have not found any way to programmatically or OS wise to remove Ethernet settings but will try to do so.

For now, at least it’s working on WiFi.

Time consuming effort. I don’t know if there is a easier path than what I did.

opened a case online, tried the chat support process eventually due to continued issues the chat support person created an escalation that lead to phone calls and additional help. Took some time but it at least initially lead to a solution.

  • removing antivirus and malware, removing Ethernet cable. Using WiFi and reinstalling antivirus and it worked.
  • today I removed the Ethernet service since I prefer Ethernet to WiFi and was able to get Ethernet and authentication to work by turning off WiFi, deleting the existing Ethernet service, rebooting and adding a new Ethernet service. All works.

I have the same issue not only with the Mac App Store but also the Music app and TV app on my Mac running the same version of MacOS Sonoma (14.2.1).

Tried calling Apple Support tonight, waiting for escalation engineer.

Prior to this step, i tried numerous rebooting, safemode reboot, logging out of my mac, and other apps on my phone with no luck so far. I even tried resetting my password, and nothing works to allow a successful login.

Waiting for escalation engineer now.

In my case I opened a ticket with Apple support and had to go through all of the level one questions and triage questions. Within 1 hour of this effort the level 1 engineer needed additional help and decided to pass my issue to a escalation engineer.

this process takes time and if there are phone disconnects which happened with 4 times it takes even longer.

but at the end of this the issue was resolved at least partially. I am still seeing issues with Ethernet connected access to iTunes and the AppStore on macOS 14.2.1 and for some reason using WiFi it works.

i have not been able to figure out why and would like to spend more time on this but don’t have it so I am sticking with WiFi until I can find the time.

I'm stuck in this endless freaking loop. I've tried everything.

One of the recommendations was to sign out of Apple ID and then sign back in because it kept giving me "unknown error occurred" when I was trying to sign on to iMessage.

Funny enough, I had to sign in to my Apple ID before I was allowed to reply to this post....and guess what, it worked but why won't it work on the dang MacBook. I'm so frustrated

I can’t help you but I am in the same situation. It all seems to be fine on my other devices and apps but locked out of my MacBook and haven’t been able to log in for days since the update. I am

self employed and this is causing major problems. Tried resetting password from the login screen but it hangs and says can’t connect to the server. Totally at a loss as to what to do.
