when used for display data, USB-C cable (with oval reversible connector) and DisplayPort cable, both require cables ONE meter or shorter for reliable operation.
USB-C cables used for displays should have the USB-C symbol stamped or molded on the ends and this SuperSpeed PLUS (10G or better) logo:
BenQ 270C
that appears to be a nominal 2K display with
2x HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4 and UB-C connectivity.
the data rates for high-end displays are approaching the limits of the switching speeds for this kind of Digital Logic, and you MUST control for cable type and LIMIT the length of the cables.
how are you attempting to make this connection? please mention very cable, dock and adapter.

Then your display is working as designed, and the last piece is understanding how the designers intended it to work.
When you connect additional displays (in addition to the built-in display) to your Mac, it will typically ADD second and subsequent displays as a large "extended desktop" concatenating displays along an edge to create one really big desktop, like this:
I have three cables plugged in for connection. The USB cable; Display Port cable; USB C cable. Theses are the original cables that came with the monitor. Yes it is the 2k display monityor specifically for photography.
Hi Grant. Thanks very much for this information, I appreciate it.
The USB-C cable that came with the monitor is longer than 1 metre. I have tried with a shorter cable without success.
I'll now go on Amazon and try to get a short cable as you describe above.

Hi Grant,
Just taken delivery of a 1 Metre length USB-c cable with the symbol stamped on each end and 10 Gbps as described above. It's a partial success in that now, not only is the Monitor being seen in "System Settings - Displays" but I'm also seeing the MacBook Pro Desktop Wallpaper on the Monitor. The Info bar and current details at the top is also seen, though with the Text on it being very feint and hard to see.
Any further thoughts?
Regards
Dave
It's connected via the USB C cable. With my previous 2015 MacBook 15" Pro Retina it connected via the (I forget it's name) Square ended Dock cable and the USB A cable connection.
As you were!
With the MacBook display closed everything is fine. (What a numpty!).
Thanks very much for sorting this problem out for me.
Best wishes.
Dave
