What is the "Sites" Folder, and Where Did it Come From?

I just noticed that my Home folder has created a new "Sites" folder. I have no idea where it came from, wasn't there last time I looked. It's completely empty, and unlike folders I have created in my Home folder, when you right click, there is no "Move to Trash" option. It has shown up on both my systems. A 2020 M1 MacBook Pro, and an Intel 2014 Mac Mini. Both systems are running Monterey 12.7.2. Don't want/need to get rid of them, just wondering where they came from and what their purpose is.

Many MANY moons ago, Mac OS X and OS X (before they renamed it macOS), there was a System Preferences -> Sharing setting that enabled the Apache web server.

Then they moved that feature to the Mac OS X Server add-on package.

Then they totally eliminate the easy to use GUI interface, but it was still possible to mess with files in /etc directory to enable Apache.

When I asked, I was not sure if you liked to play under the hood of the car, or just preferred sitting in the driver’s seat 🏎️

Why it appeared on your machines after being absent, I don't know.

Explanation from Apple developer docs.:

The image was cropped from "Table 1-2 Commonly used directories in macOS" under the sub-heading:

"macOS Standard Directories: Where Files Reside

Whether provided by the system or created by your app, every file has its place in macOS. Table 1-2 lists some of the top-level directories in a macOS installation and the types of content that each one contains."

Bob, I do in fact "tinker" with every Mac I've ever had (first one was purchased in 1984, delivered early 1985). To me, what a Mac does is of less interest than how it does what it does. My better half refers to this as the "tinkering until it's broken" syndrome.

But your question started me thinking. A couple of weeks ago I was looking around for a replacement personal finance software to the one I've been using. Even though I ended up staying with the one I had, I did try out a couple of different ones. One used their own cloud to sync the data between computers, the other used iCloud. It may be possible that one of these, somehow or another, relied on Apache to sync the data. Don't know.

The good news is that the folder is an official Apple folder. I'll just let it be.
