Error importing to Photos

I had been importing some photos files from a flash drive to Photos, when suddenly I started getting an error message (see photo). What could be causing this. Even files that I had already imported are now not able to be imported again due to the same error. Any help appreciated.

iMac (late 2012) Photos Version 5 (161.0.120).

Why are you using the flash drive? It adds complexity to the process, more opportunity for something to go wrong. And how are you copying from the iPhone to a flash drive? Are you using some other utility for that? If so, it might be doing something to the file format of the image files.

Why not simply import directly from the iPhone into the Mac Photos library? And if that does not work, try it with a brand new empty Photos Library to try to narrow down the issue.

Also, verify the integrity of the Photos Library: can you import other jpg files of any sort that are somewhere else on your Mac? If the Library itself is corrupted and refuses to import ANYTHING, that can be dealt with through other corrective measures.

You have not mentioned if you have done any troubleshooting at all. What I would do is copy the photos from the flash drive to a folder on the Mac and then import into the Photos app from the folder.

If you have already tried that and it did not work, please let us know what basic troubleshooting such as restarting the computer and re-trying the import, doing a Safe Mode restart and re-trying the import, checking the integrity of the flash drive in Disk Utility to see if it mounts, , etc..... Please give us a starting point to go from.

Thanks for your reply.

I have already tried most of what you have mentioned. As far as I can gather, the files on the flash drive are perfectly fine; I can move the files onto the Mac and open them normally with Preview, for example, but they won’t import into my Photos library. I’ve restarted the applications, restarted the Mac, etc etc. I have also removed the files from the flash drive, then re copied the photo from the iPhone back onto the flash drive, but still no luck, I get the same error message from Photos.

Any further ideas?

Thanks for your time in replying.

I’m using a iDiskk flash drive due to the fact that my aging Mac (late 2012) isn’t able to cope with my iPhone 12 when connected via a cable. Photos doesn’t even open a preview of my phone’s camera roll when connected anymore. I think the Mac is too slow now.

The frustration is due to that whilst using the method of downloading photo files from iPhone onto flash drive and then onto the Mac was working perfectly well, until I started getting the error message on Photos. So I was just wondering if the error message I was seeing is something common to other users as well.

as I said, the files on the stick seem totally useable in other applications, but won’t import into Photos.

thanks again
