Subtitles in the Apple TV app are available when the content supplier has included that in the stream. Some content may not have subtitles, or maybe not your preferred language. Please specify for which movie or TV show this happened.

The Apple TV app can have a preferred language for subtitles, for playback of content with a non-matching audio language. If the chosen preset subtitle language is not available in the stream, then no subtitle may show initially, even if other subtitle languages are available in the stream.

To see which subtitles languages are offered for any given stream, please access the settings for that during playback: Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app or iTunes Store - Apple Support
