I updated my iMac to Sonoma 14.3. After computer restart, all icons are missing from desktop.

Check the items setting in System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
A simple restart solved my problem.
I did not put them in the Trash. One piece of advice I got said that sometimes after an update, desktop folders get sent to the Trash. I checked and all of them were there. Unfortunately, many of the files that were in the folders were "loose."
I certainly hope it doesn't happen again!
Unfortunately, that did not work. I was actually missing all of my folders from the desktop. I was able to retrieve them from the Trash (a lengthy job) after trying to remember the names of all of them. Thank you for trying to help me!
I'm with you. Nothing but Apple devices since I had a Strawberry Red computer. I spent most of the day today hunting and gathering" files! In the future, I will take screenshots so I can remember what folders and files I have. However, it will probably never happen again.
I updated my Macbook to Sonoma on the second month it was released, and I do have several files/folders on my desktop. After the upgrade, the files continue to display correctly on my desktop. Strange behavior you are experiencing.
We had two sides to our computer, could flip between my husband and myself. That is now gone. Everything I have written in pages and all my desktop files are gone. My computer is like a blank screen. How do I get everything back?!!
Please start a new thread and clearly explain your issue, as this is different from the one in this thread.
FWIW, a user account does not just vanish. Please detail what you have done, what recent changes, what is your OS...
What were they doing in the Trash? You never said you tried deleting them.
Well, I've been using Macs for almost 39 years and it's never happened to me. I'll have to keep my eye on it.
And after that?
I am grateful that it didn't happen to you. What a mess and time-consuming "project."
Happened to me. Then came back, then gone a few weeks later. iCould Drive still has the files. Today is backup day. Other Sonoma machines are not affected.
