How much RAM would I need to upgrade on a new M3 Macbook Pro?

Hey guys,

I just got a job doing FIFO so lots of traveling so its time to switch things up from my M1 Mac mini desktop at home to a laptop.

I am interested in the new black M3 Macbook Pro and can see the various upgrade options when ordering.

Right now on my M1 Mac Mini I have 16GB of Ram and a measly 250gb of storage. Both of which drive me crazy.

I am a big gamer, particularly World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14. Two big games that can be around 100GB of space each and I can't currently fit both on my hardrive and can only play one at a time and even then the FPS is a bit dodgy. Whilst playing the mini struggles to do anything else like surfing etc.

So I would really like to fit BOTH games on the hard rive and play BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY. I know I definitely need to opt for the 1TB hardrive or maybe even 2TB.

The main question is cores and RAM I dont really understand. 16GB definitely doesn't cut it and I am worried 36GB wont be enough either.

How much will I need to easily run both games at once, and be able to surf the web, watch netflix, youtube etc? With no hassle, I am sick of not being able to multitask. 48GB? 64GB? 96GB? I only want to spend as much as I need too.

Thanks all!

Adam

Check the recommended processor and memory configurations for the apps involved.

For the two games cited:

For storage, check the recommendations again, and figure you'll need more than that. And storage usage only goes up, absent scattering stuff around, or absent the time and the discipline needed to delete. And figure everything only gets larger over time; your own usage, macOS and apps, everything.

It appears FFXIV requires Rosetta too, which means it's at least partially Intel and not native Apple silicon, and thus translated. Which usually means things can be slower, pending translation.

Since you want to run all of that together, the requirements will add. (And remember that macOS and all of the other apps active also need resources, or need to become inactive and be swapped out.)

Check with a local Apple Store (assuming you have one), and see if they'll let you run the games on an M3 in the store.

But probably your best bet is to ask for guidance in technical forums for the games; at the game vendor forums, or at Reddit, or elsewhere. Guidance from folks that have run these games.

You'll also need a hard disk drive of two to three times the total internal storage for Time Machine backup, either directly connected or configured as network-attached storage.

If you purchase from Apple directly, you typically have 14 days for a full refund. Which means load it all up and test it out right quick, and return it if not.
